Just an observation, will you C/C please?
Starving wasted “Wretch”, so called
uneven steps, equal to broken sidewalks
teeming with people who hunger abstractly
as Salmon instinctively
fight to be upstream
but without the same intent.
He struggles, brushing against this current
high noon tide joyful to find a half eaten sandwich
he extracts from a trash bin
devouring, feeding his thin.
Adam looking for his Eve
though his is a guiltless greed
He sucks the dried up juices of life
through a tragedy of teeth
smiling perhaps at how sweet
the Apple forbidden may have tasted.
then he staggers, on to another fate
ignored by the wave of humanity
who rush past with trim beards and manicures
and all their reservations, then digest
a 3 Martini lunch, gulping back their whine
adding to the deafening din of the streets
to present a sober face to the time clock
as he sits a bench, pickin at his teeth, smiling.
last line “on” was intentionally left out.
“gulping back their whine” = best line in the poem. The rest is really great, as usual.
