Side Fin Sets
Could a mink have taken all my koi carp?
We have a koi carp pond which is 3.5 – 4ft deep with straight sides – raised up with sleepers at the side. We live in a rural location with a small stream at the end of the garden – some 40 feet away from the pond. Until today the pond had about 30 koi carp ranging in size from 8 – 18″. My husband saw at least ten of them about 7 – 10 days ago, we went to clear out the filters and do spring maintenance today, to find not a single fish left. After draining the pond we found only one small bit of fish fin at the bottom – and three sets of ‘scratch’ marks – what looks like three claws scraped along the side of the pond into the algae, but well below the water line. Could this be mink? Or otter? And can anyone advise is there anything we can do to stop it happening again or should we just fill the pond in and give up?
yes a mink could have done that along with many other wild animals out there ! a good way to protect your fish is to make a chicken wire fence or something that you can lift off during the day and then put it down during the night like a framed chicken wire box that has some kind of pully system or something hmm.. just a idea !!
