How much do surfboards cost? – Where’s the best place to buy?
Ok, I’m going on holiday to the coast for a couple of weeks, and I wanna get a surfboard…
I’ve never surfed before, so I don’t need a pro board… However, I’ve never been a fan of “entry-level” equipment… So how much does a nice mid range board cost?
And as a matter of interest, How much do entry-level and pro boards cost?
And I live like 9 hours inland, but there are 1 or 2 places to buy surfboards here… Would it be cheaper to buy one here, or should i wait till I’m at the sea?
By the way, I’m 6.1 foot tall (1.86m) and I weigh 190 pounds (86kg)…
I’m not a longboard person! I want something maneuverable… What would be the best size board for my height and weight?
Also, could you recomment a few websites where I could check out a couple boards…

Some things to consider before buying a board. You have never surfed before, so you might not like it. It takes more than a few days to get the hang of surfing. Riding is the easy part. You also live 9 hours from the sea, bummer. If you drive, hauling a board can be a pain. Even short boards are 6′ long, necessitating a roof rack, an SUV or truck. If you fly, be prepared to pay $100 each way for the board. You might not get to use it as often as you like, since you live so far away from surf. If you have access to a wakeboard board, they can be ridden using a short rope. Anyway, you might want to rent a board when you get there. Usually it’s only like about $20 per day and you can try different types of boards. Buy one if you find one you like when you get there. Have it shipped back by UPS or other common carrier. UPS charges $65 to ship a board from NYC to LA.
Now enough of my 2 cents…
A good mid range board would cost around $500 to $700; pro boards $700 and up. You can get a cheap Chinese made board for about $300. It probably will be less expensive to get a board at the sea. There is a higher demand for boards, and generally that makes them less expensive. They may have some demo boards or out of season models. They can better get you a board for the conditions you will be surfing in, your abilities and your height/weight. A pumpkin seed might be a good board shape to try.
Don;t forget, all boards might not come with a bag or fins, these could set you back $100-200 if they are not included. You will need a leash $25 and some wax $5 for 5 cakes. A rashie or wetsuit might be a good investment as well.
