What should I know about using a flat iron?

My Aunt bought me a mini pro Conair flat iron. I plan to only straighten my bangs. I’ve gotten tiered of my bangs curling up later after I use a hair dryer to straighten my bangs and my Aunt said that a flat iron would work better for me. I’m a little nervous and I ‘REALLY’ don’t want my hair to get burned. Do I have to only touch the finger pads or can I also touch the handle? Is there a gel or somethings that I can use to prevent my hair from getting burned/ So, what should I know about using a flat iron? Mine is a mini pro Conair flat iron. I’ve read the instruction book, but that didn’t answer all of my questions.

Lots of companies make heat protecting sprays. If you go to your local drug store, you can look around and see which one you want to buy. Spray that in your hair, and wait for it to dry, so it doesn’t fry your hair. This way, it will prevent your hair from burning. You can touch the handle, yes.
