Colonial Life in Greenough

Colonial Life in Greenough

$162.5

This book is an exploration of Western Australias colonial history: one that examines and critiques two major historiographical approaches to the writing of such history, and makes the case for a new approach, which is then exemplified by a case study of colonial life in Greenough. It therefore consists of two component parts: 1) an examination of historiographical approaches and issues in the writing of Western Australias colonial history; and 2) a case study of colonial life in Greenough. The first part traces the history of the Gentry tradition of Western Australian history writing and also establishes the existence of a liberal constitutionalist school within the State. The second part traces a new history of colonial life in Greenough: one that is set apart, in different ways, from the two established schools of Western Australian history. The Art of the American Snapshot, 1888-1978 by Greenough, Sarah; Waggoner, Diane; Kennel, Sarah; Witkovsky, Matthew S. Edition ILL, 0

$39.49

The impact of the humble American snapshot has been anything but humble. Any American who takes a snapshot contributes to a compelling and influential genre. Since 1888, when George Eastman introduced the Kodak camera and roll film, the snapshot has not only changed everyday American life and memory; it has also changed the history of fine art photography. The distinctive subject matter and visual vocabulary of the American snapshot–its poses, facial expressions, viewpoints, framing, and themes–influenced modernist photographers as they explored spontaneity, objectivity, and new topics and perspectives. A richly illustrated chronicle of the first century of snapshot photography in America, The Art of the American Snapshot is the first book to examine the evolution of this most common form of American photography. The book shows that among the countless snapshots taken by American amateurs, some works, through intention or accident, continue to resonate long after their intimate context and original meaning have been lost. The catalogue of a fall 2007 exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, The Art of the American Snapshot reproduces some 250 snapshots drawn from Robert Jackson’s outstanding collection and from a recent gift Jackson made to the museum. Organized decade by decade, the book traces the evolution of American snapshot imagery and describes how technical, social, and cultural factors affected the look of snapshots at different periods.

George Balanchine

George Balanchine

$10.99

The foremost contemporary choreographer in the history of ballet, George Balanchine extended the art form into radical new paths that came to seem inevitable under his direction. He transformed movement and dance in classical and modern ballet, on the Broadway stage, and in the cinema. George Balanchine chronicles the life and achievements of this visionary artist from his early, almost accidental career in Russia, where his lifelong collaboration with Igor Stravinsky was forged, to his extraordinary accomplishments in America. The editor and writer Robert Gottlieb, one of the most knowledgeable dance critics in America, offers a superb and loving portrait of a genius who, though married many times to many ballerinas, remained truest to his greatest love, Terpischore, the Greek Muse of dance.

Alice Greenough Orr (1902August 20, 1995), a ranchers daughter in Montana, became an internationally known rodeo performer and organizer who was inducted into both the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. Orr broke horses while she was growing up on a ranch near Red Lodge, the seat of Carbon County southwest of Billings, Montana. At the age of fourteen, she left school to deliver mail by horseback over a 35mile route. She intended to become a forest ranger until the return of servicemen from World War I made such employment unrealistic for women at that time.
