I’m new at oil painting and trying the “wet on wet” technique used by Bob Ross. Can anyone help?

I have done a couple paintings and they’re coming out ok but I’m having a very hard time with some of the painting turning muddy. Usually it’s in the areas that I’m tapping the bristles trying to make bushes, leaves, highlights, etc… Instead of the lighter colors sticking on top of the base colors (like Ross does), they just blend. Should I be thinning the paint at all, or just use it straight from the tube?
Another problem I’m having is with the knife when I’m attempting to pull snow onto a mountain. If you watch Ross do this, it starts heavy at the top and as he pulls the paint “breaks” and gives a very nice effect on the mountain. When I try this, the paint usually starts ok at the top, but instead of “breaking” it starts to blend with the mountain base color and again, MUD. I’m using very light pressure but with no luck. Any suggestions? Please?

Not everything can be painted wet unto wet,especially if you are new to oil-painting. Tapping the bristles is a technique referreed to as “scrumbling”– it works best when the paint you are applying paint to is first dry. This may also apply to the solution to the problem you are having with the pallette knife. Keep in mind that Ross has only one hour to complete a full painting and a camera and editor behind him– tho he claims to be Ross may not always be painting wet/wet.
